Influenza is on the verge: should it be vaccinated?

And this season is no exception. According to forecasts, we will soon come to the new strain of the flu – H3N2, which is also called Hong Kong (named after the first flash in 2014). In addition, one might expect the arrival of H1N1 California and Brisbane. It is from these strains of influenza that this year’s vaccine has been developed. So is it necessary to split up? If so, when and how is it better?
Influenza and vaccination from this disease: useful information
It is anticipated that this year the flu will come to Ukraine in October-November with the onset of colds, the incidence of which will be possible until May 2018 inclusive. Feature of this year in the new for Ukraine strain – H3N2 Hong Kong. Ukrainians still do not have immunity to him, so he is especially dangerous for us. Experts say that Hong Kong is the most affected by children and the elderly, so they should be smart in the first place. This strain of influenza often leads to complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, problems with the work of the heart.

The vaccine is best protected against influenza. This year, the vaccines to be made available on the territory of Ukraine will include the 3 strains mentioned above. Regarding the immunization of influenza, many questions often arise, and we tried to answer the most relevant ones.

When is it best to do a vaccine? It is optimally vaccinated against influenza before the epidemiological season begins, that is, in October. This is due to the fact that antibodies are fully formed only 2-3 weeks after vaccination. However, nowadays in Ukraine there are very few vaccines for influenza, so some units can be inoculated. Doctors say it makes sense to vaccinate throughout the epidemiological season, that is, from October to May, since access to vaccines is not always the case, and immunity is formed for 6-12 months. It is advisable to get caught up and after you have already become sick with the flu this season, because you can really get sick again, but to another strain of the virus.

Why does the vaccine protect from these strains of influenza, and not from others? Each year, the World Health Organization examines which types of influenza will be distributed in a particular region of this epidemiological season. Based on these studies, recommendations are being developed and vaccines are developed, which allows us to talk about actual and effective protection. That is why it is necessary to be splashed out of the influenza every year, because the strains that are relevant for the region are changing every episode.

Can I get flu out of vaccination? Doctors say this is impossible. The vaccine consists of attenuated (inactivated) influenza strains, which are safe for humans and formulate in their body an immune response, that is, they produce antibodies against the flu. Vaccination does not give one hundred percent guarantee that a person does not get sick with this virus, but guarantees that the disease will be mild and without complications. If a person got sick immediately after vaccination, it means that she was already ill at the time of vaccination, and the symptoms were manifested in a day or two, as is often the case with acute respiratory infections and flu.

Who should spawn the flu in the first place? It is recommended to be vaccinated against influenza by all, but there are people who are at risk, and they need to do the vaccine in the first place. These are medical workers, pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. In these categories of people, there is a high probability of meeting the flu and getting dangerous complications from it.

Are there any contraindications to influenza vaccination? Contraindication is an allergy to chicken yolk, because the vaccine is cultivated inside chicken eggs. In addition, the vaccine is better not to do in the period of exacerbation of chronic diseases, during acute respiratory infections, when the body is weakened.

From what age can children be vaccinated against influenza? Vaccinations can be carried out at 6 months of age.

Consequently, it is possible and necessary to be vaccinated against influenza. Now the main thing is to buy the necessary vaccine. While in Ukraine with these real problems, from year to year the vaccine goes on sale at the end of November, while it is recommended to split up in October. Hopefully, this year the situation will change for the better, although the time for it remains less and less.
